A bookkeeping cleanup is the work of bringing a business's books from wherever they actually are to current, correct, and reconciled — usually months of transactions unrecorded, miscategorized, or never matched to the bank. It is the most common first job a new bookkeeper is hired for, because falling behind is the most common state of small-business books. This page defines the work, its milder cousin, and how a cleanup gets scoped before it gets priced.
A catch-up is volume without disorder: the records exist, the receipts are filed, the accounts are separate — the work is simply months of it, undone. A cleanup adds disorder: personal spending inside the business account, missing statements, loan payments split wrong, sales tax collected and never tracked. The distinction is not pedantry; it is the price. Catch-ups price near the low end of the band, cleanups climb it — which is why the scoping questions come before the quote, always.
The bank balance and the books disagree and nobody knows by how much. Statements are missing. The owner cannot answer 'did we make money last month?' from anything but the bank balance. Tax time produced a shoebox, an extension, or both. Any one of these is a cleanup waiting to be scoped — and for the beginner bookkeeper, the friendliest possible first engagement: bounded, needed, and visibly valuable when done.
Four questions scope most cleanups: how many months behind, how many transactions a month, how many bank and card accounts, and which mess factors are present — mixing, missing statements, unreconciled history, sales tax, payroll. Those five answers feed the pricing formula on this site. Scope in writing, quote one flat price, and let the monthly work begin where the cleanup ends.
